One Thousand Days of Genocide in Gaza

Global Alliance for Palestine: One Thousand Days of Genocide in Gaza

Today, 3 July 2026, marks one thousand days since Israel launched its assault on the Gaza Strip on 7 October 2023. In September 2025, the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry concluded that Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, and in June 2026 it found that the deliberate targeting of Palestinian children amounts to genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. One thousand days on, the record set out below is an indictment of the world’s inaction.

The Scale of the Killing

According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, more than 72,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 170,000 wounded. Despite the ceasefire announced on 10 October 2025, hundreds more have been killed. These counts are conservative. The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research assesses that the true number of violent deaths likely now exceeds 100,000, and a population-representative survey in The Lancet Global Health found that women, children and the elderly make up the majority of the dead, with around 12,200 people still missing beneath the rubble. The United Nations (UN) and the Ministry of Health recorded more than 19,000 children killed by September 2025, in a population of which children form roughly forty per cent.

A War on Children

Children have borne the heaviest share. The UN and the Gaza Ministry of Health recorded at least 19,000 children killed by September 2025, in a population of which children form around 40 per cent. In the five months following the resumption of bombardment in March 2025, UNICEF reports an average of more than 540 children killed every month. Those who survive the bombing face engineered starvation: the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) confirmed famine in Gaza governorate, and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reports that every child under five, some 320,000, has been placed at risk of acute malnutrition. Children are now dying not only from air strikes but from hunger, the predictable end of a chain that began with the destruction of their homes and hospitals.

Starvation and the Militarisation of Aid

The famine is not a natural disaster but a policy, produced by siege and by the deliberate obstruction of established humanitarian agencies. Since the US and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation began operating in late May 2025, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has recorded more than 2,100 Palestinians killed while trying to reach food, at distribution points that families describe as sites of death. More than 540 aid workers have been confirmed killed in Gaza, over 370 of them connected to UNRWA, the highest loss of humanitarian personnel in the UN’s history.

Displacement and Systematic Destruction

According to United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA), around 1.9 million people, some 90 per cent of Gaza’s population, have been displaced, many of them ten times or more, while over 86 per cent of the territory has been placed under Israeli militarised control or displacement orders. Save the Children reports that more than 370,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed, close to 77 per cent of all housing in Gaza. The healthcare system has been dismantled to the point that, according to a study in eClinicalMedicine, by mid-2025 only 12 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals could function beyond basic triage, leaving the wounded and the sick without treatment. Education has been erased for a third consecutive year, with roughly 660,000 children out of school and almost every school building damaged.

Silencing the Witnesses

The assault on Gaza has been the deadliest conflict for the press ever recorded, according to the Costs of War Project. Palestinian and UN bodies have counted well over 240 journalists killed, alongside the sustained targeting of medical staff, paramedics and rescue workers, carried out while Israel bars international journalists from independent access to Gaza.

The West Bank

The occupied West Bank has seen its sharpest escalation in decades: relentless settlement expansion, mass demolitions, intensifying settler violence, and the threatened displacement of entire Bedouin communities, advancing a project of annexation in practice.

The Demand

One thousand days of documented atrocity have produced statements without consequence. States party to the Genocide Convention hold a binding legal duty to prevent genocide and to end all complicity in it. The Global Alliance for Palestine therefore calls for a comprehensive, two-way arms embargo on Israel; the suspension of all trade, research and cooperation agreements that sustain the occupation; full cooperation with the International Criminal Court and its arrest warrants; and the full application of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions. After one thousand days, any government that continues to arm, trade with and shield the state carrying out this genocide has made itself a participant in it.
