Spain’s decision to remove its ambassador from Israel marks a significant escalation in the diplomatic rupture between the two countries and reflects years of growing tension over Israel’s genocide in Gaza and now, the US-Israeli attack on Iran.
The move effectively downgrades Spain’s diplomatic presence in Tel Aviv to a lower-level chargé d’affaires and follows a series of confrontations between the Spanish government and Israeli officials since 2023.
Spain has been one of the most outspoken European critics of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, recognising the State of Palestine in 2024 and later approving a full arms embargo on Israel. The latest step also comes after Spain refused to allow its military bases to be used for U.S-Israeli attack against Iran, further widening the rift.
Taken together, these decisions signal that Spain is willing to translate political criticism into concrete diplomatic action, something that remains rare among Western governments and could increase pressure on other European states to reconsider the normalisation of relations with Israel amid ongoing allegations of war crimes.
