Statement on the Illegal Interception and Torture of Participants of the Global Sumud Flotilla
The Global Alliance for Palestine (GAFP) issues this formal statement following the illegal boarding and subsequent abuse of the Global Sumud Flotilla:
On 20 May 2026, the international community witnessed an act of maritime piracy transition into a systematic campaign of state-sanctioned violence.
What was seen was an orchestrated assault on international law and the fundamental principle of humanitarian solidarity, designed to shield Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza from the world’s gaze.
The mission – a coalition comprising the Global Sumud Flotilla and the Freedom Flotilla Coalition – consisted of 54 vessels carrying 428 peace activists from 44 nations. Intercepted in international waters over 500 kilometres from the coast, these civilians were met by Israel with overwhelming force, including communications jamming and the use of plastic bullets.
The subsequent abduction of these individuals into Israeli custody has revealed a harrowing pattern of physical and psychological trauma that mirrors the structural and systemic dehumanisation routinely inflicted upon Palestinian hostages.
A Campaign to Silence the Global Conscience
The reports from released detainees are harrowing! Dozens of activists have returned with severe injuries, alongside at least 15 documented allegations of sexual assault and rape.
This treatment is not incidental; it is a calculated attempt to intimidate international solidarity and ensure that Israel’s policy of genocide in Gaza remains hidden behind a wall of violence.
Anas Altikriti, Chairman of the GAFP’s Interim Executive Committee, stated:
‘This flotilla carries the unwavering resolve of a global community that refuses to remain silent while a genocide is broadcast in real-time. Israel’s violent interception is a desperate attempt to sever the link between the people of Gaza and the conscience of the world. We will not be intimidated into looking away from the systematic destruction of Palestinian life.’
The broadcast of these abuses by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, captioned ‘Welcome to Israel’, represents a definitive collapse of state accountability.
By documenting himself mocking bound detainees, Ben-Gvir has confirmed that such degradation is official policy. This spectacle of sadism serves as a stark warning: Israel currently operates under a sense of total and absolute impunity, viewing international legal standards as optional while it carries out genocide in Gaza.
From Rhetoric to Tangible Retribution
While 30 nations have issued condemnations and 10 have summoned envoys and ambassadors, the GAFP asserts that diplomatic rhetoric has reached the limit of its utility.
Statements do not offer protection, nor do they provide justice for victims of torture and sexual violence. To continue with ‘deep concern’ in the face of such evidence is to signal to Israel that there is no material consequence its war crimes.
We demand an immediate transition to tangible accountability mechanisms. This must include a comprehensive arms embargo, the freezing of state assets, and a rigorous application of Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS). We call for the immediate investigation and prosecution of Itamar Ben-Gvir and the relevant naval commanders. The international community must move beyond the safety of words; it is time to attach a decisive and unavoidable cost to the violation of human life and the pursuit of genocide.
